According to review-aggregator website metacritic.com, Asghar Farhadi’s Iranian drama A Separation was the best-reviewed film released in the U.S. during 2011. It also garnered a slew of international awards, and critics’ awards, and went on to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (the first Iranian film to do so). It’s also the highest grossing Iranian film in American history.
So who is Asghar Farhadi? He seemed to come out of nowhere, emerging as a master filmmaker overnight. It turns out that Farhadi has been around for a while, having made four previous features. In May and June all five of Farhadi’s movies will show here, making Cleveland only the second American city to present a complete Asghar Farhadi retrospective.
