The 13th-century mystic Jalal al–Din Rumi has been called “one of the great humanists, philosophers, and poets who belong to humanity in its entirety.” The influence of his poetry transcends national and religious boundaries: the inspiration for the Mevlevi order, or “whirling dervishes,” his work has been widely read in the West since the 19th century, and remains influential today in the Arab world and beyond. We will study Rumi’s great works, including the Fihi ma Fihi and Masnavi, as well as his influences, including the Qur’an, the works of al–Ghazali, his father Bahauddin, and the mysterious Shams of Tabris(6/21/2008 - 8/16/2008)
