For more than two thousand years, southwestern Iran was referred to in ancient sources as the land of Elam. In this course we will use the latest archaeological and historical evidence to explore the intriguing, largely unknown story of the ancient Elamites, their rise to power and prosperity, and their eventual fall to the emerging Persian Empire.
Instructor: Tobin Hartnell, an archaeologist and PhD candidate in the University of Chicago's Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, has excavated and surveyed in Iran since 2004.
