Historical evidences indicate that diverse ethnic groups have lived in Iran contemporaneously during the past five thousand years. Furthermore, the ethnic combination in Iran has fluctuated during the long history of that country. In particular, through conquest or the cultural influences of an ethnic group, the ethnic identities of other groups have been gradually changed. In order to understand the ethnic identities of the contemporary Iranians we need to examine three basic questions: 1) What are the factors contributing to the formation of an ethnic group? 2) How and why the ethnic composition has fluctuated throughout the history of Iran? 3) What is the nature of the contemporary ethnic composition in Iran?
