Ivanov, a depressive landowner, is at the end of his tether. Business is bad and his wife, Anna, is dying. While for Chekhov we are all Ivanovs, for the Iranian director Amir Reza Koohestani the young woman's freshness, authenticity, optimism, and disarming enthusiasm symbolise resistance to the inescapable. This Iranian version of a Russian classic turns its back on fatalism; its message of hope makes an unambiguous case for freedom.
