Two-Legged Horse by Samira Makhmalbaf (2009, 101 min.) Makhamalbaf’s controversial film tells the story of Mirvais, a poor Afghani boy, hired for a dollar a day to act as porter and caregiver to a disabled boy. The relationship between the two becomes exceedingly sadistic and cruel, the “master” often referring to the other boy as his “horse.” Criticized for her dark, humiliating subject matter, Makhamalbaf maintains that her film is about humanity and survival, and how far one will go to dominate a relationship.
Members, seniors, and students $8; general admission $10
