‘When I sing, I don’t know if I am old or young, where I am from or where I belong; I feel I am a lover, or a mother, or a wanderer... I can cry and laugh out loud. My singing is a response to my life, and it gives voice to the deepest parts of me. It extends beyond everything I know, and I am one with it… it possesses my whole being.’ —Mahsa Vahdat
Curated by Christos Vayenas of the Autumn Salon, Sacred Voices draws together the mediums of music, storytelling and performance to honor the beauty and power of the human voice, and it’s unique ability to dissolve stigma, restore dignity, and inspire authentic self-expression.
Held in beautiful Gordon Chapel in Boston's Copley Square, this performance features renowned Persian vocalist Mahsa Vahdat in her first-ever visit to the East Coast, who'll be sharing the songs and stories of her beautiful and ancient musical tradition, something that's publicly forbidden for her to do as a woman in her native country of Iran.
This evening will celebrate the power of the female voice, and the freedom to express it. Mahsa will be joined by esteemed cellist Naseem Alatrash for the second half of the performance, who will improvise accompaniment to Mahsa's melodies of Sufi poetry.
