Shokooh Mirzadegi and her husband Esmaiel Nouri Ala (Esmail Nooriala) co-edited a literary magazine called Puyeshgarān (Explorers) for eight years. Alongside their literary activities in Persian, they have been actively involved in education and women's social (socio-feminist) issues, in Iran, the United Kingdom and America.
In the early 1970s (Iran's last King), Mirzadegi was among writers and artists trying to free political prisoners. She was arrested and initially sentenced to death. On accepting to plea for pardon on a TV show-trial, she was freed after a while. After the Revolution of 1978-1979, she was arrested again and was released only after the intervention of some Human Rights activists, notably Abdolkarim Lahiji of International Federation of Human Rights Leagues.
