Professor El-Cheikh’s lecture will investigate the court and the courtiers in the fourth/tenth and fifth/eleventh centuries as described in Abbasid and Byzantine texts and contexts. While the focus is on the roles and positions of particular Abbasid courtiers, court ceremonials, and the interconnection between harem and court, Professor El-Cheikh will make frequent references to the Byzantine court, within a comparative framework, in terms of sources and institutional models.
