Description
Dr. Sheila Canby, Curator of Islamic Art and Antiquities at The British Museum, London, will be making a special presentation on this topic, and on the art within these shrines, in eight cities across the United States. In her presentation, Dr. Canby will examine the roles that the Ardabil Shrine, the dynastic heart of the Safavid Dynasty, the Shrine of Imam Riza in Mashhad, and the Shrine of Fatimeh Ma’sumeh in Qum, played in establishing Shiism as the state religion of Iran and the Safavid rulers as its protectors. Dr. Canby received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Her recent books include, Safavid Art and Architecture (2002), Persian Love Poetry (2005) with Vesta Sarkhosh Curtis, and Islamic Art in Detail (2006). At the present time she is working on an exhibition, scheduled for 2009, focusing on the period of Shah ‘Abbas the Great (late 16th and 17th centuries) connected with the three most important Iranian shrines in the Safavid period. The project was recently awarded an Arts and Humanities Research Council Religion and Society grant to work on the exhibition and catalog.
