Iranian Graduate Students Association is honored to host a concert by Mastero Hossein Alizadeh and Pezhham Akhavas on Friday, March 11 at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
Hossein Alizâdeh is an Iranian composer, researcher, teacher, and tar and setar instrumentalist and improviser, described by Allmusic as a leading Iranian classical composer and musician. Hossein Alizadeh is considered as one of the most important figures in contemporary Persian music, exemplifying excellence in traditional Persian music today. He has performed, as a solo artist, in Iran, North America, Europe and Asia. He was the conductor and soloist in The Iranian National Orchestra of Radio and Television. He established the acclaimed Aref Ensemble and has often worked with the Shayda Ensemble. His first professional experience in Europe was performing with the famous Bejart Ballet Company’s orchestra for Maurice Bejart's ballet, Gulistan. The album, Endless Vision has been nominated for the Best World Music Album of the Year 2006 in the 49th Edition of the Grammy Awards. In November 28th, 2014, although awarded, he refused to accept France’s high distinction in art, Legion of Honour.
Pezhham Akhavass is is a world class percussionist, Global Music Director of San Francisco World Music Festival, and modern day virtuoso of Persian percussive instruments Tombak and Daf. He is well known for his unique technique and approach to rhythm and has been termed one of the most capable artists of his generation. Born in 1980 in Iran, Pezhham began learning music theory and tombak at the age of 5. With the support of his father, Pezhham studied Persian classical music and many different instruments with the great masters of traditional Persian music. Pezhham graduated with a degree in music from the Sureh University in Tehran and continues his education in the U.S.A. in music. He began working professionally in his 20s with the renowned vocalist Shahram Nazeri from 2000-2007 where he traveled the world and has had the honor to perform in some of the most prestigious venues. Pezhham now lives in the San Francisco, where he teaches, performs and produces concerts.
