With the recent parliamentary elections behind us, Afghanistan is once again in the centre of political and military attention. However, less people usually focus on the Afghan (film)culture. The Afghan Film Festival tries to change this by taking a fresh peek into Afghan society and into the cultural initiatives that are currently being undertaken in the country.
On Saturday November 13th 2010, the first edition of the Afghan Film Festival takes place. For one day, film theatre Rialto in Amsterdam will be the stage for the best Afghan films, documentaries, visual arts, music and debates. During this first edition, we will place our spotlights especially on the future of Afghanistan and the role of its (youth) culture.

CINEMA
The documentary 'Vote Afghanistan!' (2009) offers a shocking peek behind last year’s presidential elections. Directors Martin Herring & Havana Marking (known from 'Afghan Star') follow three presidential candidates who all want to change Afghanistan’s political system in their own way. But is the establishment willing to offer them this chance?
MUSIC
No ‘Urban bullshit’ about cars, money and women, but social-critical raps about his own life and the things he’s been through. At the Afghan Film Festival, upcoming hiphop-talent DSI-BEL (17) will blow us away by his seamless combination of Dutch and Afghan lyrics.
ART
Childhood memories from Kabul, interwoven with things you’d rather delete from your memory; many artists in the Afghan diaspora have a complex though fascinating relationship with their past. In the exhibition ‘Erased Memories’ by Jeanno Gaussi, many elements seem to be absent in her pictures of Kabul.
