On August 15th 2015, Global Day of Peace for Iran, thousands of Iranians will gather in cities across the world to show support for a historic nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. This is a grassroots movement organized by dozens of volunteers in more than 40 major cities across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
On July 14th 2015, Iran and six world powers reached a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. Iran accepted to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for lifting of economic sanctions. These sanctions have crippled the Iranian economy and hurt the lives of millions of innocent Iranians inside and outside Iran.
Volunteers all around the world are gathering to show support for this agreement, which will make the world and the Middle East a safer place, give Iranian civilians a relief from harsh economic sanctions, and allow for resumption of peaceful relations between Iran and the United States. This is happening while pro-war lobbies in the U.S. are spending millions of dollars on campaigns to kill this deal and the prospect for a sustainable peace.
As President Obama has warned on several occasions, the alternative to this deal is another billion dollar war in the Middle East. The continuation of enmity with Iran will result in further destabilization in the region, an increase in migration and an escalation of the refugee crisis, as well as a growth in the threat of terrorism and extremism. It is time that the most powerful and influential states in the region come together and work together for peace and stability for all, rather than against one another. The nuclear deal is a first step in that direction and the long road ahead.
