Rarely heard in the West, the classical music of Iran is one of the oldest and most sophisticated of the world's musical traditions. Four of the area's most talented exponents of this tradition will treat audience members to the art of the dastgāh (musical modes) that have been performed for centuries for royal audiences in the palaces of Old Persia.
Intimately entwined with the classical poetry of such masters as Rumi and Hafez, as well as the mystical traditions of the Sufi, Persian classical music can be seen as a kind of poetic expression, transmitted through the tones of the players' instruments. Weaving together strands of familiar melody and enlivened by periodic flights of improvisation, skilled performers can uplift the spirits of their listeners, bringing their souls nearer to the divine essence that lies within.
The instruments used will include the santur ("instrument of 100 strings," the original hammered dulcimer), tar (long-necked lute), tombak (goblet drum), and daf (large frame drum). Special guest vocalist Momtaz Charepoo of St. Louis, Missouri will join the ensemble for several poetic songs with lyrics by classical Persian poets including Hafez, Saadi, Attar, and others.
The program will be divided into three parts:
Part 1 - Dastgāh Esfahān and Dastgāh Shur
Part 2 - Santur solo in Dastgāh Chahārgāh
Part 3 - Dastgāh Māhur
A 7:30 p.m. meet-and-greet featuring complimentary Persian snacks will precede the 8 p.m. program. A variety of beverages (including freshly squeezed pomegranate juice) will be on hand for a nominal charge.
