The Cyrus Cylinder is one of the most important and iconic objects in world history, and now it’s on view at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum. Modest in size and appearance and made more than 2,500
years ago, many consider the Cylinder the first ever proclamation of human rights. The inscription on the baked-clay Cylinder records the victory of Cyrus the Great over Babylon in 539 BCE.
More importantly, it mentions Cyrus’s return of enslaved people in Babylon to their homelands and his support for freedom of worship. This unprecedented declaration has inspired generations of philosophers, rulers, elected officials, and artists from all over the globe.
