Nooroz, translated “New Day,” is celebrated as the start of the new year by Iranians, many Shia Muslims, adherents of the Baha’I faith, and other ethnic groups. Twelve countries observe Nooroz as a public holiday, and many more recognize Nooroz on their national calendar. It typically occurs on March 21, around the time of the spring equinox. In Iran, families lay out a traditional table setting known as the Haft Sin, which typically includes: greenery, samanu (a sweet pudding), garlic, apples, vinegar, sumac berries, and dried fruit. Children often decorate eggs to be placed on the table. Although people celebrate Nooroz in many ways, it is universally celebrated as a time of new beginnings.
