Studio Arab-esque is proud to host a special two-hour intensive level Persian dance workshop taught by the accomplished Shahrzad Khorsandi as a part of the Studio’s master teacher workshop series. Shahrzad is a dancer, instructor, educator, author, and dance director from northern California and will be teaching two separate workshops the weekend of June 11 and 12 in Southern California. One at Studio Arab-esque in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, June 11, and the other in the San Fernando Valley on Sunday, June 12.

Space is limited to 10 students, so purchase your tickets early. No tickets will be sold on the day of the workshop. Students with prior knowledge of Persian dance and music are encouraged to attend.

For the past 20 years, Shahrzad Khorsandi has dedicated her professional life to performing and teaching this beautiful and ancient dance form. Born and raised in Iran, Shahrzad holds a BA in Dance, and an MA in Creative Arts from San Francisco State University. Her dance training includes Modern, Jazz, Ballet, West African, Afro-Haitian and Flamenco. Her website can be found at www.dancepersian.org.

Recently she wrote the book The Art of Persian Dance which is the first book to establish a formalized pedagogy which encompasses the foundational principals of Persian dance technique. The Art of Persian Dance provides the structure and vocabulary for teaching a style of dance that has been part of Persian culture for millennia. It details body positions, rules for achieving correct body line, and descriptions and over 200 detailed illustrations of the patterns and transitions that define the technique.

Shahrzad will teach the aesthetics distinct to Persian culture to isolate those elements that define the movements as Persian. Her commitment to creating a comprehensive method for teaching this technique, including categorization of movements and positions, and establishing a nomenclature, have made her a pioneer in the dance community.
